π’ Do You Need an ISBN for KDP?
ISBN is one of the most misunderstood topics in self-publishing. The short answer: KDP will give you a free one. But what that free ISBN costs you β in control and professional positioning β is something every indie author should understand before publishing.
What an ISBN Actually Controls
ISBN stands for International Standard Book Number. It's a 13-digit identifier that uniquely identifies a specific edition of a book β including its format. But the part that matters most for self-publishers is the publisher prefix, which is embedded in the ISBN itself.
What the ISBN prefix reveals
The publisher prefix is registered to whoever purchased the ISBN. If you use a free KDP ISBN, the publisher prefix belongs to Kindle Direct Publishing. Any system that looks up your ISBN β booksellers, libraries, media databases β will see KDP as the publisher, not you or your imprint.
With a free KDP ISBN
- β Publisher of record: Independently published
- β That text appears on your Amazon product page
- β Book cannot be sold in most retail bookstores
- β ISBN is tied to KDP β cannot be transferred
- β Cannot be used on IngramSpark or other distributors
With your own ISBN (Bowker)
- β Publisher of record: Your imprint name
- β Your imprint appears on Amazon and industry databases
- β Can distribute via IngramSpark, D2D, Findaway, etc.
- β ISBN is yours forever β not tied to any platform
- β Eligible for library systems (Bowker, WorldCat)
Print vs Ebook ISBN: What the Rules Actually Say
Ebooks and print books are treated very differently in the ISBN world β and KDP's own rules add another layer of nuance.
| Format | ISBN Required? | Free KDP Option? | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kindle ebook (MOBI/KFX) | No β KDP uses ASIN | N/A | Amazon assigns an ASIN automatically. ISBNs are not used for Kindle ebooks. |
| EPUB ebook (wide) | Recommended | No | When distributing via Draft2Digital, Smashwords, or direct retail, an ISBN improves library listings and discoverability. |
| KDP paperback | Yes β but can be free | Yes | KDP assigns a free ISBN, but publisher of record becomes "Independently published". |
| KDP hardcover | Yes β but can be free | Yes | Same as paperback. A separate ISBN from paperback is required even for the same content. |
| IngramSpark print | Yes β must be your own | No | IngramSpark requires you to own your ISBN. Free KDP ISBNs cannot be used on IngramSpark. |
| Audiobook (ACX) | No | N/A | ACX uses its own identifier. ISBNs for audiobooks are optional but useful for library distribution. |
Buying Your Own ISBN: Bowker & Pricing
In the US, ISBNs are exclusively sold by Bowker at myidentifiers.com. In the UK, they're sold by Nielsen. In Canada, they're free from Library and Archives Canada. The pricing below is for US-based authors.
Fine for one-time use. Expensive per-unit if you plan more books.
Best value for most indie authors. Covers 3β4 books across multiple formats.
Best for prolific authors or small presses publishing 10+ books per year.
When You Must Have Your Own ISBN
Using KDP's free ISBN is perfectly fine for many indie authors. But there are specific situations where you absolutely need your own ISBN.
You want to distribute via IngramSpark
IngramSpark distributes to 40,000+ retailers, libraries, and academic distributors worldwide β including physical bookstores. It requires an ISBN you own. KDP free ISBNs are rejected. This is the most common reason indie authors buy their own ISBNs.
You want your imprint (not "Independently published") to appear on Amazon
When you use a KDP free ISBN, Amazon displays "Independently published" as the publisher on your book's product page. If you want your imprint (e.g. "Redwood Press" or "Northlight Books") to appear instead, you must use your own ISBN and register the imprint name with Bowker.
You want to sell to libraries via OverDrive, Hoopla, or Bibliotecha
Library ebook and audiobook distribution platforms require ISBNs. Without your own ISBN, you have very limited access to library distribution channels β a growing revenue stream for indie authors.
You want your book listed in Bowker Books In Print
Books In Print is the industry database that booksellers, libraries, and media use to look up books. Registration requires your own ISBN. Without it, your book won't appear in wholesale database queries.
KDP-only ebook and print distribution
If you only sell on Amazon β ebook, paperback, and hardcover β the free KDP ISBN is sufficient. You can always upgrade to your own ISBN later for a new edition, though you would need to create a new book listing.
Setting Up Your Publishing Imprint
An imprint is simply a name under which you publish. It doesn't require a separate legal entity β you can register an imprint as a sole proprietor or DBA ("Doing Business As"). Here's how to do it properly.
Choosing an imprint name
- β’ Should not contain your author name (keeps it professional and flexible)
- β’ Genre-neutral works if you write across categories
- β’ Check that the name is not already registered (search USPTO.gov in the US)
- β’ Reserve the .com domain for your imprint, even if you don't build the site immediately
- β’ Examples: Birchwood Press, Clearwater Books, Irongate Publishing
Registration steps
Every Format Needs an Audience. Every Audience Needs Reviews.

Can I use one ISBN for both my ebook and paperback?+
No. Each format requires its own ISBN. Your Kindle ebook, KDP paperback, KDP hardcover, audiobook, and large print edition must each have a unique ISBN. Additionally, significant content updates (new edition, substantially revised content) require a new ISBN. Minor corrections (typos, formatting) do not.
What happens if I published with a free KDP ISBN and now want my own?+
You cannot transfer an ISBN. If you want to switch to your own ISBN, you must create a new book listing on KDP (or wherever you distribute) using your new ISBN. Your existing listing stays live with the old ISBN. Your sales history and reviews do not automatically transfer. For this reason, it's better to decide upfront whether to use your own ISBN.
Does KDP require an ISBN for Kindle ebooks?+
No. Amazon assigns an ASIN (Amazon Standard Identification Number) to every Kindle ebook. This is Amazon's internal identifier and replaces the ISBN for the ebook format on their platform. You do not need an ISBN to publish a Kindle ebook. If you plan to distribute your ebook to other retailers (Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play), an ISBN is recommended for those platforms.
Is my imprint the same as my LLC?+
Not necessarily. Your imprint is a publishing brand name β the name that appears on your book as the publisher. Your LLC is a legal business entity. They can have the same name, but they don't have to. Many indie authors operate a sole proprietorship and simply use their imprint name as a DBA ("Doing Business As") registered with their county or state β no LLC required.
How do I get my book into libraries?+
To get your book into public libraries, you need: (1) your own ISBN, (2) distribution via IngramSpark (which supplies to the library wholesale market), and (3) registration in Bowker's Books In Print database. Ebook library lending requires additional distribution through platforms like OverDrive, Hoopla, or CloudLibrary β typically via a distributor like Draft2Digital or Findaway Voices. Libraries don't typically purchase self-published titles directly from Amazon.
