What Is KDP Hardcover?

KDP Hardcover is Amazon's print-on-demand hardcover service, launched in 2021 and expanded globally since. Like KDP paperback, each copy is printed only when a customer orders — no inventory, no upfront cost. The key differences are the case-laminate cover binding, a higher perceived value, and a higher printing cost that must be factored into your royalty calculation.

Unlike traditional publishing, where hardcover rights are often retained by publishers for the first year, indie authors control both editions simultaneously. You can list your hardcover at $24.99 and your paperback at $14.99 on the same Amazon product page — giving readers the choice and you the higher royalty when buyers choose the premium format.

When Hardcover Is Worth It

Not every book benefits from a hardcover edition. These four categories consistently outperform on the format.

High purchase intent

Gift Books

Books bought as gifts — cookbooks, coffee table books, illustrated nonfiction, children's books — benefit enormously from hardcover. Gift buyers are less price-sensitive and more likely to choose the premium format. A hardcover gift book at $29.99 competes on perceived quality, not price.

Library & shelf-display

Nonfiction & Self-Help

Business books, memoirs, and self-help titles with a strong authoritative brand benefit from hardcover as the "flagship" edition. Readers who buy nonfiction to display and reference it repeatedly often opt for hardcover. It also positions you as a credible expert.

Fan purchases

Box Sets & Collector Editions

If you have an existing readership that loves your series, a hardcover collector edition of book one — or a special anniversary edition — can generate strong sales from your existing fan base without requiring new content.

Visual-first content

Illustrated & Specialty Books

Art books, photography books, illustrated poetry, and heavily designed interiors benefit from the higher-quality feel of hardcover binding. The case-laminate finish elevates visual-forward books in ways paperback cannot match.

How to Set Up Your KDP Hardcover

Follow these seven steps to publish your hardcover on KDP correctly the first time.

1

Check Eligibility

KDP hardcover requires 24–550 pages and is available in US, UK, and select EU markets. Supported trim sizes include 5.5″×8.5″, 6″×9″, and 7″×10″. Color interior is supported but increases printing costs significantly.

2

Format Your Interior File

Use Atticus, Vellum, or Adobe InDesign. Set margins to at least 0.25″ on all sides with additional gutter allowance for page count (KDP's margin guide specifies this by page count). Embed all fonts and export to PDF/X-1a.

3

Design Your Cover Wrap

Use KDP's cover calculator to get your exact spine width — it changes with every page count update. Your cover must be a single flat PDF: front cover, spine, and back cover. Spine text is required for books over 100 pages.

4

Calculate Your Royalty

KDP pays 60% of list price minus the printing cost. For a $24.99 hardcover with a $7.50 printing cost: 60% × $24.99 = $14.99, minus $7.50 = $7.49 royalty per copy. Run this math before finalizing your price.

5

Set Your Price

Price your hardcover at least $5–$10 above your paperback edition. Most nonfiction hardcovers sit at $24.99–$34.99; fiction hardcovers typically price at $19.99–$27.99. Avoid pricing so low that your royalty drops below $3–$4 per copy.

6

Order a Proof Copy

This is non-negotiable. Order a physical proof before approving for sale. Check: spine alignment, cover color accuracy (colors print darker than on screen), interior margins, and the case-laminate finish quality.

7

Launch and Get Reviews

Hardcover buyers tend to be higher-engagement readers who leave longer reviews. Submit your hardcover ASIN to iWrity to build your review base before and during launch — reviews on the hardcover listing appear separately from the paperback.

Cover Wrap Specifications

KDP hardcover cover specs are stricter than paperback. Here are the key requirements for the most common trim sizes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I publish a hardcover on KDP without a paperback?+

Yes. KDP hardcover and paperback are separate products with separate ISBNs. You can publish a hardcover edition without a paperback, though most authors publish all three formats (ebook, paperback, hardcover) simultaneously to capture every buyer segment.

Does KDP hardcover have expanded distribution?+

Yes, but it is more limited than paperback expanded distribution. KDP hardcover reaches Amazon marketplaces and select retail partners. Paperback expanded distribution has broader reach into libraries and independent bookstores via Ingram.

How long does KDP hardcover printing take to ship?+

KDP hardcover printing typically adds 2–5 business days to shipping times compared to paperback. On Prime, customers may see longer estimated delivery windows for hardcover. This is standard for print-on-demand and is disclosed on the product page.

Are KDP hardcover reviews separate from paperback reviews?+

Yes. Each format has its own ASIN and its own review count. A review left on the hardcover ASIN does not appear on the paperback listing and vice versa. Plan your ARC campaign to cover whichever edition you want reviewed at launch.

What is the minimum and maximum page count for KDP hardcover?+

KDP hardcover requires a minimum of 24 pages and a maximum of 550 pages. Books outside this range are not eligible for the hardcover format. Very short books (under 100 pages) may also have limited distribution due to spine width constraints.
