Amazon KDP Paperback Formatting: Everything You Need to Know

Formatting a KDP paperback is fundamentally different from ebook formatting. You are working with physical dimensions, binding gutters, bleed areas, and spine width formulas. Get it wrong and you will face upload errors, print rejections, or — worst of all — 1-star reviews mentioning your formatting. This guide covers every step from blank document to approved print file.

1

Choose Your Trim Size

The trim size is the final physical size of your printed book. KDP supports a range of standard sizes. Your genre and page count should guide this decision:

Trim SizeBest ForNotes
6 × 9 inFiction, non-fiction, most genresMost common; looks professional
5.5 × 8.5 inSmaller novels, novellasSlightly more compact feel
8.5 × 11 inWorkbooks, journals, activity booksHigher royalty due to page count reduction
5 × 8 inPocket-sized fictionIncreases page count; affects spine
Important: Your trim size must be set before you start formatting the interior. Changing it later requires reflowing all your text and recalculating margins.
2

Set Up Your Margins (Gutter)

Print margins are more complex than ebook margins because the inside edge of each page disappears into the binding. KDP requires a minimum gutter (inside margin) that increases with page count:

Page CountMin Inside MarginRecommended
24–150 pages0.375 in0.5 in
151–300 pages0.75 in0.875 in
301–500 pages0.875 in1.0 in
500+ pages1.0 in1.125 in

Outside, top, and bottom margins can typically be 0.5–0.75 in. Add bleed (0.125 in on all sides) if your interior has elements that extend to the page edge.

3

Front Matter

Front matter appears before your main text. Standard front matter for a KDP paperback includes:

Front matter pages are conventionally numbered in Roman numerals (i, ii, iii...). The Arabic numeral page count begins with Chapter 1.
4

Body Text Formatting

The interior text is where most self-publishers make errors that show up in reader reviews. Follow these standards:

Typography

  • Body text: 11–12pt, serif font
  • Recommended fonts: Garamond, Palatino, Georgia, Minion Pro
  • Line spacing: 1.2–1.5x (avoid double-spacing)
  • Paragraph indent: 0.3–0.5 in (no extra line breaks between paragraphs)

Chapter Headings

  • Always start on a new right-hand page (for novels)
  • Use consistent heading style throughout
  • Drop caps are optional but add polish
  • Scene breaks: use *** or a decorative glyph, not just blank lines
Common mistake: Using Times New Roman or Arial. While technically accepted by KDP, these fonts look amateurish in print. Invest 10 minutes in switching to a proper book font — your readers will notice.
5

Back Matter — Your Growth Engine

The back matter of your book is prime real estate. Readers who finish your book are your warmest audience. Use this space strategically:

6

The Full Wraparound Cover

The KDP paperback cover is a single PDF file containing the back cover, spine, and front cover laid out flat. The spine width depends on your page count and paper type:

// KDP spine width formula

White paper: page_count × 0.002252 inches

Cream paper: page_count × 0.0025 inches

// Example: 300-page novel on white paper

300 × 0.002252 = 0.6756 in spine width

Bleed on covers: All covers require 0.125 in bleed on all sides. Background images and colors must extend to the bleed edge — not the trim line.
Common cover mistake: Spine too narrow for text. KDP requires a minimum spine width before any text can appear on it. Check KDP's current minimums before adding your title or author name to the spine.

Formatting Tools Compared

Vellum

Mac only — $249.99 one-time

The gold standard for fiction formatting. Beautiful output, fast, handles both ebook and print. Worth every dollar if you are on a Mac and publishing multiple books.

Atticus

Windows + Mac — $147 one-time

Browser-based app (works everywhere). Very similar feature set to Vellum. Slightly less polished output but improving rapidly. Best choice for Windows authors.

MS Word + KDP Template

Free with Office subscription

Download KDP's official Word templates for your trim size. Doable but time-consuming. Prone to formatting inconsistencies. Good starting point for first-time publishers on a tight budget.

Adobe InDesign

$22.99/month (Creative Cloud)

Professional typesetting tool. Highest control over output. Steep learning curve. Recommended only if you already use the Adobe suite or have a professional designer.

Common KDP Paperback Formatting Mistakes

Wrong bleed settings

Set bleed to 0.125 in on all sides in your PDF export settings. Missing bleed causes white edges on printed pages.

Spine too narrow for text

Calculate spine width accurately before designing. Text on spines under ~0.5 in is not allowed by KDP.

Not embedding fonts in the PDF

When exporting to PDF, always check 'embed fonts'. Missing fonts cause KDP to reject your upload.

Using RGB color profile instead of CMYK

Print uses CMYK. RGB colors (especially vibrant blues and oranges) shift significantly in CMYK print. Design covers in CMYK from the start.

Inconsistent chapter formatting

Use paragraph styles, not manual formatting. One click to update all chapter headings instead of fixing each one.
